TL;DR

  • A long-handled back shaver is the easiest way to clear your own back, in about ten minutes.
  • Hair removal cream lasts a little longer than shaving and needs an applicator for the middle of the back.
  • Waxing lasts weeks but needs a salon or a second pair of hands.
  • Laser is the long-term option: most people need two to six sessions, four to six weeks apart.
  • Clear the shoulders and neck first, since they show the most in tank tops.

Back Hair Removal for Men: The Quick Answer

There are five ways to get rid of back hair. They're listed here from the easiest to do by yourself to the longest-lasting:

  1. Back shaver: a razor or trimmer on a long handle. Takes about ten minutes, and regrowth shows in a few days.
  2. Hair removal cream: breaks the hair down at the skin's surface. Lasts a little longer than shaving and needs an applicator to reach the middle of your back.
  3. Body trimmer: keeps hair short instead of removing it. Easiest with a partner or for the shoulders.
  4. Waxing: pulls hair from the root, so regrowth takes weeks. Needs a salon or a second pair of hands.
  5. Laser: reduces hair over several sessions at a clinic. The only option on this list that lasts long-term.

How to Get Rid of Back Hair by Yourself

A back shaver puts a blade on a long handle, so you can reach between your shoulder blades without help. Two designs dominate: a manual razor like BAKBLADE and an electric shaver like Mangroomer.

The manual razor gives a closer, smoother result but works best on hair that's already short. The electric shaver handles long, thick hair in the first pass and leaves light stubble.

How to Shave Your Back With a Back Shaver

  1. Trim long hair first with the electric head or a body trimmer so the blade doesn't clog.
  2. Shower for five minutes so the hair softens and the skin is warm.
  3. Stand with your back to a mirror and hold a hand mirror to see the middle.
  4. Shave downward with the grain in short strokes, starting at the shoulders.
  5. Rinse the blade often and finish with a light, fragrance-free moisturizer.

Swap the blade cartridge when it starts to drag. BAKBLADE sells 12-packs of replacement cartridges, so one order lasts most people a long time.

Back Hair Removal Cream for Men

Hair removal cream breaks down the keratin in the hair so it wipes or rinses away. It reaches below the surface a little, so the smooth feel lasts longer than a shave and there's no stubble line.

Use a cream labeled for the body and made for men's coarse hair. Spread it on dry skin, set a timer for the label's time, then rinse it off in the shower.

Patch test, then set a timer

The American Academy of Dermatology says to test a cream on a small area first and skip it if it burns or stings. Cleveland Clinic warns that leaving it on too long can cause chemical burns.

Whichever you pick, don't shave the same day. Cream on freshly shaved skin can sting, so check the label for how long to wait after a shave.

Waxing Back Hair: Salon or Home?

Waxing pulls hair out at the root, so regrowth takes a few weeks instead of a few days. The catch is reach: you can't spread wax evenly or pull a strip at the right angle on your own back.

A professional can wax your whole back in one visit. Ask how they handle hygiene: the AAD advises picking a salon that never double-dips a wax stick back into the pot.

Let it grow first

Wax grips hair best at about a quarter inch long. If you've been shaving, wait two to three weeks before your first appointment.

Sugaring is a gentler option that uses a paste instead of wax. Our sugaring guide for men explains how it compares on pain and ingrown hairs.

Before a Back Wax Appointment

  • Skip lotion and oil on your back that morning so the wax grips.
  • Shower before you go, so the skin is clean and dry.
  • Book the longest slot the salon offers the first time. Thick hair takes longer than the menu estimate.
  • Avoid hot tubs, saunas, and the gym for the rest of the day.

Laser Back Hair Removal for Men: Sessions and Results

Laser is the one method that reduces hair long-term. According to the AAD's laser FAQ, the first treatment usually removes 10% to 25% of the hair, and most people need two to six treatments.

Sessions are spaced every four to six weeks, and the AAD notes that a large area like the back can take more than an hour. Results are best on light skin with dark hair.

Between sessions, clinics usually ask you to shave instead of waxing or plucking, because the laser targets the hair root. Most clinics also ask you to let a tan fade first.

Price depends on your city and the clinic. Our laser hair removal cost guide breaks down per-session and package pricing, and the men's laser guide covers what to ask before booking.

Questions to Ask a Laser Clinic

  • Which laser do you use for my skin tone?
  • Who does the treatment, and how many backs have they done?
  • Is a patch test included before the first full session?
  • What does a package cost, and what happens if I need more sessions?

The AAD notes that burns and skin color changes are more likely in inexperienced hands, so the provider matters as much as the machine.

Shoulder and Neck Back Hair: Where to Stop

The edges show more than the middle. Hair on the tops of the shoulders and the back of the neck shows in tank tops and with short hair, so clear those zones even if you leave the rest.

Where shaved skin meets hair you're keeping, trim a short fade instead of stopping at a hard line. A body trimmer such as the Lawn Mower 3.0 Plus on a short guard, then a longer one, softens the edge.

  • Back of the neck: ask your barber to clean up the nape at every haircut. It's the hardest spot to see yourself.
  • Keeping hair elsewhere: our guide to femboy body hair covers trimming lengths by zone and how to soften what you keep.

Back Acne and Ingrown Hairs After Back Hair Removal

Your back sweats under tight shirts and backpacks, so bumps often show up a day or two after removal. With acne, the AAD says to shave lightly, never shave over a blemish, and test electric and blade razors.

Wear a loose cotton shirt for the first day. From day two, exfoliate twice a week with a long-handled brush or scrub mitt so hairs don't get trapped as they grow back.

Our guide to preventing ingrown hairs covers the full aftercare routine, and it works the same on your back as anywhere else.

Back Acne or Ingrown Hairs?

Ingrown hairs sit right at a follicle, and you can often see a hair curled under the skin. Back acne spreads across the upper back and shows up whether or not you remove hair.

  • Bumps that started only after removal: treat them as ingrowns and exfoliate.
  • Bumps you had before: a body wash with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide is the usual first step.
  • Benzoyl peroxide can bleach towels and shirts, so rinse well and use white towels.

How Often Should Men Remove Back Hair?

There's no fixed rule. Most people repeat their method when regrowth starts to show in the clothes they wear most. Use this table as a starting point and adjust.

  • Back shaverEvery 3-5 days
  • Hair removal creamAbout once a week
  • Body trimmerEvery 1-2 weeks
  • Waxing or sugaringEvery few weeks, once regrowth reaches 1/4 inch
  • LaserEvery 4-6 weeks during a course of treatment

Removing hair more often mostly adds irritation. If your back is red or bumpy, let it settle before the next round, and moisturize daily in the meantime.

Summer vs. winter

Many people shave weekly in summer for tank tops and the beach, then switch to a monthly trim under winter layers.

Signs It's Time for the Next Round

  • Stubble shows through a white T-shirt.
  • Hair at the shoulders pokes out past tank-top straps.
  • The edge of your fade has grown into a visible line.
  • You have a pool day or beach trip coming up.

Which Back Hair Removal Method Fits You?

If you want a smooth back for one event, shave or use cream the day before. If you want it smooth for months, start laser now, because a full course can take several months.

Budget matters too. A back shaver and cream cost less than one salon visit, so many people start at home and book a wax or laser once they know how much they care.

How long do you want your back to stay smooth?

Your Back Hair Removal Kit

Start with the back shaver. Add the cream and applicator if stubble bothers you within a few days, and keep spare blades so you're never shaving with a dull one.

Let the back shaver dry outside the shower between uses, as the AAD suggests for any razor. Swap the cartridge once it starts to tug, even if it still looks clean.

Frequently Asked Questions

For most guys, a long-handled back shaver like BAKBLADE or Mangroomer. It works without help, takes about ten minutes, and costs less than one salon visit. Laser is the best option if you want the hair reduced long-term.

Use a back shaver with an 18-inch handle, or a hair removal cream with a long-handled applicator. Shower first, stand with your back to a mirror, hold a hand mirror to see the middle, and shave downward with the grain.

Laser reduces hair long-term, and the AAD says most people need two to six treatments spaced four to six weeks apart. Electrolysis can remove hair permanently, but it treats one follicle at a time, which is slow for an area the size of a back.

It depends on your city and the clinic, and a back takes several sessions, so most clinics sell packages. Ask what happens if you need more sessions than the package covers, and whether a patch test is included.
