Femboy Skirts: How to Size, Style, and Wear Your First Skirt

TL;DR

  • Start with a pleated or A-line skirt and an elastic or high waistband, since both fit straighter bodies.
  • Size by your waist where the skirt will sit, then check the hips on straight and pencil styles.
  • Read the length in inches. On someone 5'9" to 6', 15-16 inches lands around mid-thigh.
  • Thin biker shorts underneath handle coverage, wind, and chafing at once.
  • For a first time out, a skort is easiest because the shorts are built in.

Femboy Skirt Basics: Where to Start

  1. Measure your waist where you want the skirt to sit, then size by that number.
  2. Pick a pleated or A-line style first. Both flare over the hips, so they fit straighter body shapes well.
  3. Check the length in inches. On a taller body a "mini" sits higher than the photo shows.
  4. Wear thin shorts underneath for coverage and to stop thigh chafing.
  5. Tuck in a fitted top so the waistband shows.

Women's sizing runs on waist and hip measurements, and most AMAB bodies have a straighter waist-to-hip line. That's why flared skirts are the easiest place to start. They don't need hips to hang right.

How to Measure for a Skirt With a Male Body

Measure around the spot where the waistband will sit. For high-waisted skirts that's an inch or two above your belly button. For low-rise styles it's just above your hip bones.

Your waist (inches)Typical US women's sizeTypical letter size
27-284-6S
29-308-10M
31-3312-14L
34-3616-18XL
37-3920XXL

Use the table as a starting point and always check the brand's own chart, since sizes vary. If you're between sizes, an elastic waistband gives you room to grow into either one.

Straight and pencil skirts are different. Measure your hips at the widest point, usually across your butt, and size by whichever number is larger. A skirt that fits the waist but not the hips will ride up as you walk.

Measure over thin underwear, not jeans. Thick fabric adds an inch or more, and you'll end up a size too big.

Skirt Length for Taller Bodies

A product photo only shows how the skirt fits the model. If you're taller than the model, the same skirt lands higher on your thigh. Many listings give the model's height, so compare it to yours and check the length in the size chart.

As a rough guide for someone 5'9" to 6', a 15-16 inch skirt sits around mid-thigh and a 19-20 inch skirt sits just above the knee. Hold a tape against your leg from your waist down to see where yours would land.

Allow for sitting

Skirts ride up about two inches when you sit. If a length feels right standing but you'll sit a lot, at a desk or in class, go one length longer.

Midi skirts fall below the knee on most heights and barely ride up at all. They suit cold weather and places where you'd rather blend in.

Anything shorter than 15 inches is hard to sit and bend in. Save those for skirts with built-in shorts. Skorts and lined tennis skirts usually say so in the listing title.

Pleated Skirts for Men: Start With a Tennis Skirt

A tennis skirt's pleats spread when you walk, which adds movement and makes the hips look wider. Some have shorts sewn inside. If the listing doesn't say "built-in shorts" or "lined with shorts," plan to wear biker shorts under it.

Wash pleated skirts on cold and hang them to dry. High dryer heat can flatten the pleats, and once they're gone they don't come back without an iron.

To bring flat pleats back, iron on low heat through a damp cloth and press each pleat into place one at a time.

Plaid Skirts for Femboys

Plaid pleated skirts are the classic femboy look. The Urban CoCo tartan skirt has an elastic waist, which makes sizing much easier on a straighter body. The Floerns plaid mini is a shorter tartan option.

Wear a plaid skirt at your natural waist, just above the belly button, with the top tucked in. Sitting it lower on the hips makes the legs look shorter.

Pick Your Skirt Budget

Tap a tier to see skirts at that level.

Red-and-black and gray tartans are the easiest to wear. They go with black, white, and gray tops, so one skirt covers a week of outfits.

Check the pleat type too. Knife pleats all fold one way and lie flat, while box pleats stand out more and add hip width.

Skorts and Denim Skirts for Everyday Wear

If you want to wear a skirt somewhere casual without thinking about it, a skort is the answer. Denim versions look ordinary next to a T-shirt, so they're good for errands and campus.

A-line denim skirts flare slightly from the hips, which suits a straighter frame better than a tight pencil cut. Look for stretch denim with 1-2% elastane.

Check the inside before you buy. Good skorts have shorts sewn to the waistband rather than a loose liner, so they stay in place when you sit or climb stairs.

Kawaii and Layered Femboy Skirts

Tiered skirts with ruffles and bows are the most recognizably femboy style. The PRSFPN tiered skirt has ruffled layers, a side bow, and built-in shorts. The Seazoon ruffle skirt is pleated, with over 7,000 ratings.

Layered skirts come in mini and knee lengths. The knee-length versions are easier to wear out and still show off the ruffles.

Layered skirts add a lot of volume at the hips, which helps on a straight frame. Keep the top plain and fitted so the outfit doesn't look busy.

Check for small sizing

Many kawaii-style brands on Amazon use smaller Asian sizing. Read the size chart in inches, and check reviews for "runs small" before you order. If in doubt, size up one.

Bows and lace look best when only one piece has them. Pair a ruffled skirt with plain socks and a solid top.

What to Wear Under a Skirt

High-waisted biker shorts sit flat under almost any skirt. Pick a length an inch or two shorter than the skirt so they don't peek out when you sit.

If your thighs touch, swipe Body Glide on the inner thighs before you dress. Smooth legs also help a skirt look finished. Our leg shaving guide covers a full leg shave, from prep to aftercare.

Sitting in a skirt

Smooth the back of the skirt under you with one hand as you sit, then keep your knees together or cross your ankles. It keeps the pleats flat and the hem in place.

In cold weather, wear opaque tights instead of shorts. Black tights go with every skirt in this guide and hide leg hair if you don't want to shave.

In summer, thin cotton slip shorts breathe better than spandex biker shorts. They're sold as under-skirt or anti-chafing shorts.

How to Style a Femboy Skirt: Tops, Socks, and Shoes

A boxy cropped tee tucked into a high waistband is the easiest top. Add thigh-high socks and platform sneakers and the outfit is done in three pieces.

Match the top to the skirt's volume. A fitted top with a full skirt, or a looser top with a slim skirt, keeps the proportions balanced.

  • School or work: a tucked cropped tee, knee socks, and loafers.
  • Weekend: a half-tucked graphic tee, crew socks, and platform sneakers.
  • Evening: a fitted black top, thigh-highs, and chunky boots.

Which Skirt Fits Your Style?

Pick the look you'd wear most days.

Shoes set the mood. Loafers and white socks look preppy, chunky boots look goth, and plain sneakers keep the outfit casual.

Keep jewelry small with a busy skirt. One necklace or a pair of studs is enough when the skirt has a print or ruffles.

How to Wear a Skirt as a Guy for the First Time

Pick a short trip for your first time out, like a coffee run or a walk with a friend. A skort is the most comfortable first outfit because the shorts are built in.

  • Do a sit test at home. Sit, stand, and climb a few stairs in front of a mirror.
  • Bring a layer. A long cardigan or overshirt tones the outfit down if you want it to.
  • Wear shoes you've already broken in, so the skirt is the only new thing.
  • Wear shorts underneath on windy days, even under a longer skirt.

If someone asks about it, a short, plain answer is enough. Most comments come from curiosity, and the second outing feels far easier than the first.

Men have worn skirts in many cultures and centuries, and The Met ran a whole exhibition on it in 2003. For full outfits built around these pieces, see our femboy outfit ideas and the femboy clothing guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

A skort or a pleated tennis skirt. A skort has shorts sewn inside for coverage, pleats flare over the hips so a straighter body fills the skirt out, and an elastic waistband makes sizing forgiving.

Measure around the spot where the waistband will sit, usually an inch or two above the belly button for high-waisted skirts. Size by that number using the brand's own chart. For straight or pencil skirts, measure your hips too and size by the larger number.

Most wear thin high-waisted biker shorts, about an inch or two shorter than the skirt so they don't show when you sit. In cold weather, opaque black tights work under any skirt and hide leg hair.

Check the length in inches, since the product photo only shows how it fits the model. On a 5'9" to 6' body, a 15-16 inch skirt sits around mid-thigh and 19-20 inches sits just above the knee. Go one length longer if you'll sit a lot.
