TL;DR
- Your rib cage and pelvis set the frame. Fat, muscle, posture, and clothing are what you can change.
- Train the deep core with stomach vacuums, dead bugs, planks, and ab wheel rollouts 3-4 times a week.
- Skip heavy weighted side bends, which build the obliques and widen the waist.
- Build the side glutes, since wider hips make the same waist look smaller.
- Waist trainers shape an outfit for a few hours. They don't change the waist permanently.

A narrower waist comes from a tight core, a little less belly fat, wider hips around it, and clothes that cinch in the right place. Here's how to get a femboy waist by working on all four.
How to Get a Femboy Waist: What You Can Change
Your rib cage and pelvis set the frame, and training won't change either one. You can change how much sits on that frame and how wide your hips look next to it.
- Train the deep core with stomach vacuums, dead bugs, and planks so the waist pulls in.
- Skip heavy oblique work like weighted side bends, which can thicken the sides.
- Build the side glutes so the hips flare out below the waist.
- Lose belly fat slowly with a small calorie deficit if your waist measurement is high.
- Wear high-waisted bottoms that sit at your narrowest point.
Expect 1-2 inches off the waist over three months if you're carrying some belly fat. If you're already lean, most of the change will come from posture, hip training, and outfits.

Posture changes the waist fastest. Stand with your ribs stacked over your hips instead of flared forward, and the waist looks narrower before any training starts.
Measure Your Waist-to-Hip Ratio First
Wrap the tape around the narrowest part of your torso, usually an inch or two above the belly button. Then measure the widest part of your hips and butt. Divide the waist number by the hip number.

Most AMAB bodies start around 0.9, and a ratio near 0.8 reads as clearly curvy. Training the hips moves the second number up while core work and fat loss move the first one down.
Use a soft fabric tape and keep it flat against the skin without pressing in. Breathe out normally before you read it, since sucking in can take an inch off the number.
Your Waist Routine at a Glance
| Exercise | What it does | Sets & reps |
|---|---|---|
| Stomach vacuums | Pulls the waist in | 5 holds of 15-20 seconds |
| Dead bugs | Flattens the lower belly | 3 x 10 per side |
| Forearm plank | Holds the core tight | 3 x 30-45 seconds |
| Ab wheel rollouts | Trains the front of the core | 3 x 6-10 |
| Banded side walks | Widens the hips | 3 x 15 steps each way |
Do this 3-4 times a week. It takes about 20 minutes, and each move has form cues below. Spread the sessions across the week so your deep core has time to recover.
If you already train glutes or thighs, put the waist work at the end of the session. Core work done first tires the muscles that brace you during squats.
Stomach Vacuums for a Smaller Waist
Routine: 5 holds of 15-20 seconds
Breathe all the way out, then pull your belly button toward your spine as far as it goes and hold. Keep breathing shallowly through your chest. This trains the deep muscle that wraps around your waist like a belt.

Start on your back with knees bent, then progress to kneeling and finally standing. Once you can hold 20 seconds standing, you can do them anywhere, including at your desk.
Practice them on an empty stomach, first thing in the morning or before a meal. A full stomach pushes back against the hold and keeps it shallow.
If you need a full breath mid-hold, release, breathe, and start the next rep. Holding through dizziness doesn't make the exercise work any better.
Dead Bugs and Planks: Core Work That Keeps the Waist Narrow
Lie on your back, arms up and knees bent over your hips. Press your lower back into the floor, then slowly lower the opposite arm and leg. Your back stays flat the whole time.

Photo by LittPro Inc on Unsplash
- Arms only: feet stay on the floor while you lower one arm at a time.
- Legs only: arms stay up while you lower one leg at a time.
- Full dead bug: opposite arm and leg lower together.
- Ball squeeze: add the pilates ball once the full version feels easy.
For a harder version, hold a small pilates ball between your hand and the opposite knee and press them together as the other side lowers. Finish the core block with three forearm planks of 30-45 seconds.
Keep the tempo slow, about three seconds down and one second back up. Fast reps let momentum take over, and that's when the lower back starts to arch.
Ab Wheel Rollouts for a Tighter Waist
Routine: 3 sets of 6-10 from your knees
Kneel on your mat, grip the ab wheel, and roll forward only as far as you can without your lower back sagging. Pull back with your abs, not your arms.

Shorten the rollout. If your back arches at the far end, your abs have let go and your spine is taking the load. Roll out to a doorframe and stop there until you get stronger.
No wheel yet? Plank walkouts train the same pattern. Start in a high plank, walk your hands a few inches forward, hold for one breath, and walk them back.
Work up to full rollouts from the knees before trying them standing. Standing rollouts load the lower back far more, and you don't need them for a narrow waist.
Skip Heavy Oblique Exercises for a Narrow Waist
The obliques are muscles like any other. Train them with heavy dumbbell side bends or weighted twists and they grow, which adds width right at the waistline.

Our personal trainer: "I keep obliques in the program because a strong core protects your back, but only at bodyweight. Side planks are plenty. Nobody who wants a narrow waist needs a 40-pound side bend."
Keep side planks and bird dogs in the routine. They work the obliques by resisting movement, with loads too light to add much size.
Wider Hips Make the Waist Look Smaller
The eye judges a waist by what's around it. Building the side glutes with banded side walks and clamshells pushes the hips out, so the same waist looks smaller in a mirror.

Loop fabric glute bands above your knees and take 15 small steps each way. Our femboy hips routine has the full hip program if you want to go further.
Train hips 2-3 times a week on your core days. Side walks and clamshells add about 10 minutes to the routine above.
- Banded side walks: 3 x 15 steps each way, knees soft, toes pointed forward.
- Clamshells: 3 x 15 per side, heels together, hips stacked on top of each other.
- Side-lying leg raises: 3 x 12 per side, with the top leg slightly behind your body.
Waist Trainers for Men: What They Do and Don't Do
A Cleveland Clinic doctor says a waist trainer's effect is temporary. Tight ones also squeeze the ribs and make breathing harder. Treat a cincher as clothing you wear for a few hours.

Workout belt or outfit cincher?
Pick based on when you'd wear it.
The neoprene belt is for warmth and back support during training. Any extra sweat under it is water, and that weight comes back as soon as you drink.
Take it off to eat, never sleep in it, and loosen it if you feel short of breath or lightheaded. Start with 2-3 hours at a time.
Pick a cincher by your waist measurement, not your pants size. Brands size these differently, and one that's too small digs into the ribs.
Wear the cincher over a thin cotton layer, not on bare skin. It cuts rubbing at the hooks and keeps sweat off the fabric.
Outfits That Show Off a Femboy Waist
Low-rise pants put the waistband at your hips, which hides the waist you're building. High-waisted skirts and pants sit at the narrowest point and draw the eye there.

A high-waisted pleated skirt with a boxy cropped tee is the easiest version. The skirt flares out over the hips, and the tee ends right at the waistband. In summer, swap the tee for a cotton cropped tank.
A wide belt at the natural waist works over dresses and long tops. Wear it at the narrowest point you measured, not down at your hip bones.
Skirt or High-Waisted Pants?
Which one fits how you dress now?
Bodysuits and fitted tucked tops keep the line clean, since no fabric bunches at the waistband.

Tracking Your Waist Progress: What to Expect
Your waist can swing an inch in a day from food and water, so ignore single readings. Compare the monthly average. Most people see a steady drop after the first four weeks.
Take a front and side photo in the same light every four weeks. Photos show posture and hip changes that a tape measure misses.
Eat 300-500 calories below maintenance. That takes off about half a pound to a pound a week, and keeping protein high protects the hip and thigh muscle you're building.
Strength numbers are another sign. If your plank time and rollout reps keep climbing, the deep core is getting stronger even in weeks the tape doesn't move.
A smaller waist looks best with fuller legs and hips below it. Pair this with our femboy thighs routine and the glute routine for the full hourglass shape.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, within the limits of your frame. Core training, losing some belly fat, and better posture can take 1-2 inches off over three months if you're carrying some fat. Building the hips and wearing high-waisted clothes make the waist look smaller too.
Stomach vacuums, dead bugs, planks, and ab wheel rollouts train the deep core without adding bulk to the sides. Avoid heavy weighted side bends and twists, which grow the obliques and add width at the waistline.
Only while you're wearing one. A Cleveland Clinic doctor notes the effect is temporary, and tight trainers can press on the ribs and make breathing harder. Use one to shape an outfit for a few hours, take it off to eat, and never sleep in it.
Most AMAB bodies start around 0.9, and a ratio near 0.8 reads as clearly curvy. Divide your waist measurement at its narrowest point by your hip measurement at its widest, and track it weekly at the same time of day.
