Manzilian 101: What A Male Brazilian Actually Involves (And How To Prep)

TL;DR

  • A manzilian removes all hair from pubic mound to crack in 30-45 minutes.
  • Hair at quarter-inch length, ibuprofen an hour out, lidocaine 30 min before.
  • Pain scale: first pull is worst; crack is the toughest zone.
  • Aftercare: cool rinse only, aloe twice a day, cotton boxers for 48 hours.
  • Regular cadence is every 4-6 weeks; hair grows back finer after 2-3 visits.

What A Manzilian Is (And Covers)

A manzilian wax is the male version of a Brazilian. It removes hair from the pubic mound, the shaft, the scrotum, the perineum, and between the cheeks — in one sitting, usually with hard wax.

Most salons use hard wax for a manzilian because it grabs hair without sticking to skin. Soft wax (strip wax) is common on legs and backs but too harsh for the bits.

Expect the appointment to run 30-45 minutes. The waxer works in small sections and you flip positions a few times. The vibe is clinical. Five minutes in, the awkwardness is gone.

How To Prep For Your Manzilian Appointment

Prep starts the day before. Exfoliate the whole area with a gentle scrub or glycolic wash — dead skin traps hairs and slows the pull.

Day-of, hair should be about a quarter-inch (6mm) long. If it's longer than a grain of rice, trim with a bikini trimmer on a medium guard. Shorter than that and the wax can't grip.

  1. 24 hours out: exfoliate in the shower with a mitt or a salicylic wash.
  2. Morning of: shower, skip lotion, skip deodorant on the area, skip body oil.
  3. 60 min before: take 400-600mg ibuprofen if you can tolerate NSAIDs. Cuts inflammation meaningfully.
  4. 30-45 min before: apply a lidocaine 5% numbing cream, cover with plastic wrap, let it soak.
  5. At the door: wear loose boxers or loose shorts. Tight briefs pressing into fresh wax is miserable.
Don't shave the week before

Waxers need the hair to be long enough to grip. Shaving 2-3 days out means your first appointment gets rescheduled or done badly. Just trim.

What A Male Brazilian Wax Appointment Looks Like

Good salons do this all day, every day. Your waxer has seen more dicks this month than you have in your life. The awkwardness is one-sided and it passes fast.

You'll strip from the waist down (socks can stay on), get on the table, and the waxer starts at the top of the pubic mound and works outward. They'll hand you a section of your own body to hold taut while they pull — yes, including the shaft.

For the back section (perineum and crack), you'll either lie on your back in a butterfly position, hug your knees to your chest, or get on all fours. Most waxers use a mix depending on your body and their reach.

How Much A Manzilian Hurts

Honest answer: sharp, quick, and localized. Think strong pinch that lasts under two seconds per pull, repeated across the session. The first few pulls are the worst — your nervous system adapts quickly after that.

The hurt map most clients report:

ZonePain levelWhy
Pubic mound6/10Lots of hair, thick follicles, but flat skin
Shaft3/10Loose skin glides, hair is finer
Sack4/10Skin pulls easily — less shocking than expected
Perineum7/10Thin skin, high nerve density
Crack / inner cheeks8/10Tight skin, stubborn follicles
It gets easier every appointment

By the third manzilian, the hair grows back thinner and the pain drops to a 3-4 out of 10 on average. Most regulars describe it as annoying, not painful.

Hard Wax Vs. Soft Wax — And DIY Kits

Most at-home manzilian attempts fail because people reach for strip wax. Strip (soft) wax bonds to skin and hair both, which is workable on a shin and brutal on a scrotum.

If you're waxing at home, use hard wax beads melted in a warmer, applied thick, pulled once hard. No strip. The wax pulls off with the hair inside it.

Manzilian Aftercare — First 72 Hours

Aftercare decides whether you walk out smooth or break out in angry red bumps. The first 24 hours are the window that matters most.

  • Cool-rinse shower only for 24 hours. Hot water opens follicles that just got traumatized.
  • Skip the gym, sauna, and sex for 24-48 hours. Friction + sweat = folliculitis bacteria.
  • Pure aloe gel twice a day for three days. Keep a bottle in the fridge.
  • Cotton boxers only — no synthetic briefs, no skinny jeans rubbing the area.
  • Day 3 onward: exfoliate gently every other shower to prevent ingrowns as regrowth starts.

How Often To Get A Manzilian

Pubic hair grows in three phases, and not every follicle is growing at the same time. Your first manzilian only catches follicles currently in the active phase. The next appointment catches the ones that were dormant.

By appointment three or four, growth syncs up and stays patchy for days rather than weeks. Most regulars settle into every 4-6 weeks — any longer and hair gets past the wax-grippable length.

Queer, Gay, And Femboy-Friendly Salon Tips

Most salons do manzilians; not all do them well, and a few still handle them awkwardly. A quick phone call solves 90% of this.

Ask three things when you call: does the salon regularly do men's Brazilians? Can I request a specific waxer who's experienced with them? Do you use hard wax on the intimate areas? A salon that answers yes to all three is worth the drive.

The tipping question

Yes, tip your waxer — 15-20% is standard in the US, same as any beauty service. They just spent 30 minutes with your crack held open; it's a service like any other.

Keeping Skin Smooth Between Appointments

The manzilian is the easy part. Keeping the area bump-free between appointments is the part that earns compliments.

Pair the routine with our ingrown hair prevention protocol and our post-shave routine for a full between-appointments kit. Most of the people who love their manzilian result are the ones running a two-minute daily skincare routine in the area.

Frequently Asked Questions

Honestly, sharp but quick. Each pull hurts strongly for under two seconds, then fades. First appointment is the worst. Pubic mound and crack hurt the most (6-8/10); shaft and sack are less than expected (3-4/10). Ibuprofen an hour before and a numbing cream 30 minutes before cut the experience meaningfully.

Most guys stay smooth for 2-3 weeks, with light regrowth at week 3 and full grow-back by week 4-6. Rebook every 4-6 weeks to keep follicles syncing up. By the third appointment, hair grows back finer and the wax-to-wax interval gets longer.

Not at a salon that does them regularly. Waxers trained in men's Brazilians do several a day and the whole thing is clinical, not awkward. Call ahead and ask if they do manzilians weekly — a yes means you'll get a skilled, matter-of-fact experience. Gay, straight, trans, femboy — all are normal clients.

Every 4-6 weeks is the standard cadence. Any longer and hair regrows past the wax-grippable length, meaning you'd need a pre-trim or skip the session. After 2-3 appointments, follicles sync up and regrowth slows, so you can stretch intervals slightly.
