TL;DR
- Pick one hair removal method and stick with it — mixing causes irritation
- Exfoliate thighs 2-3 times per week to prevent bumps and ingrowns
- Moisturize daily with a lightweight lotion containing hyaluronic acid
- Wear loose pants for 24 hours after any hair removal session

Looking for silky smooth thighs? This guide covers how to get smoother, hairless, supple thighs — and feel great about them too.
Shaving and Hair Removal
The easiest way to get smooth-to-the-touch thighs is removing the hair on them. There are multiple methods, and we have a whole series on hair removal already posted.
However you do it, don't leave a lot of hair behind in the areas you want smooth.
If thigh shaving takes forever, a body trimmer gets you 90% of the smoothness in 20% of the time. Save the razor for the day before a big event.
If you're not used to shaving your thighs (or the process takes forever), consider a body trimmer instead of a razor.
Specifically, body trimmers designed to get as close to the skin as possible deliver faster results with a lower chance of ingrown hairs or other blemishes.
Softening Your Hair
Unless you're a pro, shaving all the hair off your thighs isn't always enough to get smooth skin. Here's why: no matter how thorough you are, hair grows back. When it does, it can feel rougher than before.
Traditional shaving leaves hair (especially coarse hair) with jagged, pointy tips. Either way, you feel them — right after shaving if you missed spots, or a few days later when regrowth starts.
Ways to soften hair
- Exfoliating regularly (we wrote a full guide here)
- Taking baths
- Routinely applying moisturizers
- Using oils like coconut oil or tea tree oil (the latter especially after shaving)
- Using a special shaving gel, cream, or foam

Exfoliating
After the shower, pat (don't rub) your thighs dry, leaving them slightly damp. Apply lotion within 3 minutes and it locks in 3× the hydration versus applying to fully-dry skin.
We already have a full exfoliation guide, but there's one thing especially relevant to smooth thighs that we left out of that article.
Summary of the main article
- Mechanical exfoliants like body scrubs clear your skin and make it smoother
- A loofah or pouf in the shower exfoliates before and after hair removal
- Moisturizing body washes keep skin hydrated and reduce irritation
- A dry brush works like a shaving brush for extra exfoliation
- Regular exfoliation leads to softer hair, reducing ingrown hairs in thick, coarse areas
On top of mechanical exfoliants, don't skip chemical exfoliants. Moisturizers with certain acids — AHA, glycolic acid, hyaluronic acid, or salicylic acid — noticeably smooth the skin and speed up cell turnover.
That cell turnover fades blemishes and makes skin look younger, healthier, and more supple.
Picking a Moisturizer
Consistent moisturizing is one of the biggest factors in getting smooth, healthy skin. Picking the right one matters.
“There's definitely not a one-size-fits-all for all skin types American Academy of Dermatology”
The skin on your thighs has different needs from the skin on your face. Don't use the same product for both.
Start by identifying your skin type. Oily skin consistently shines or feels greasy. Dry skin appears rougher or flakier. Normal skin sits between the two.
Match to your skin type
Oily skin wants a lighter moisturizer, or even a gel moisturizer, that won't clog pores further.
Dry skin wants moisturizers that support the skin barrier — ceramides, specifically. Also moisturize multiple times per day and look for fragrance-free, non-comedogenic, alcohol-free formulas.
Pick your moisturizer budget
All three tiers deliver real results — the difference is longevity and ingredient density.
Drugstore staples like CeraVe and Cetaphil punch way above their price. Ceramide-based, fragrance-free, and backed by decades of clinical data.

Moisturize Right After You Bathe!
The goal: moisturize your thighs when they're not dripping wet, but not quite dry. Damp skin holds onto the natural moisture from bathing.
There are even special moisturizers designed for use right after bathing called wet moisturizers. I don't use them, but some people swear by them.

Body Butters
If you can work body butter into your routine, try it. It's denser than lotion and sits on the skin longer.
Using body butter at night before bed retains moisture, nourishes the skin, and leaves you smelling great the next morning.
Lotion is 70-85% water with emulsifiers. Body butter is closer to 30-40% water, with shea or cocoa butter making up the rest. Same job, different staying power.
Most body butters complement existing moisturizers and extend their effect into noticeably smoother, softer skin.
Using Oils
Depending on your skin type, oils may not be a great idea — if you already have very oily skin, skip this section.
For everyone else, I use a mix of coconut oil and tea tree oil the day after I shave and most nights. This sits on top of moisturizing and body butter.
Tea tree oil specifically helps prevent ingrown hairs and other blemishes (more on that here).
A pea-sized amount of oil mix rubbed in vigorously until it disappears is plenty. If you still feel slick 10 minutes later, you used too much.
Some people shy away from oils because they don't want that oily feeling all day. Done right, oil mixtures don't leave skin feeling greasy.
A small amount rubbed in well delivers benefits you'd normally only get from expensive, highly-specialized moisturizers.

Look for a daily body lotion with hyaluronic acid, ceramides, or shea butter — the three ingredients that consistently win clinical comparisons for skin-softness scores.
Taking Baths
Lastly, don't forget one of the age-old techniques for softening skin: taking baths. They aren't practical for everyone, but even an occasional one does wonders for your skin.
Thighs and butt skin in particular benefit most from a long soak. The warm water opens pores and softens keratin buildup.
Baths are also good for your mood. Think of it as your own spa day. Add a couple of bath bombs (which contain many of the same ingredients as moisturizers) and you're set.
Smooth thighs live inside a bigger skin routine. Our smooth skin guide covers the full daily stack, and our exfoliation guide handles the step most people under-invest in.
Frequently Asked Questions
For most people, shaving with the grain using a quality razor and thick shaving cream gives the smoothest results. Follow up with exfoliation and daily moisturizing for lasting smoothness.
Exfoliate before shaving, use a sharp razor, shave with the grain, and apply an alcohol-free moisturizer immediately after. Bumps usually mean the razor is dull or you are pressing too hard.
Yes. Daily moisturizing softens the skin surface and reduces flakiness. Look for lotions with hyaluronic acid, shea butter, or ceramides for the best results.
Every 2-4 days depending on how fast your hair grows. Shaving daily causes irritation for most people. Find the minimum frequency that keeps you happy with the smoothness level.
