Shaving and Hair Removal
One of the easiest ways to ensure your thighs are smooth to the touch is to remove the hair on your thighs.
You can do this in a variety of ways, and we have a whole series on hair removal already posted here. However you choose to do it, make sure there isn’t too much hair around the areas you want to see smooth.
If you’re not accustomed to shaving your thighs, or if you find doing so takes a lot of your time, consider using a body trimmer instead.
Specifically, there are body trimmers designed to get as close to the skin as one could, usually resulting in faster shaves that may have a lower chance of causing ingrown hairs or other blemishes.
Softening Your Hair
Unless you’re an absolute pro, shaving all of the hair from your thighs might not be enough to ensure you remove the effect hair has on smooth skin.
Allow me to explain: regardless of how thorough you are–and nobody’s perfect all the time–your hair will eventually grow back, and you may find it feeling a little rougher than when you began.
This is because traditional shaving techniques can sometimes leave hair (especially coarse, rough hair) having jagged, pointy tips.
If you don’t get all of the hair off of your skin, you may feel these hairs right after having shaved. If you were really thorough, maybe it’s just when the hair begins to grow back.
Regardless, this brings up an interesting question: how do we make sure you can glide your hands around your thighs without feeling those sharp hairs–even against the grain of hair growth?
This is where softening your hair would come in. To soften your hair, try:
- Exfoliating regularly (we wrote an article on how to do that here)
- Taking baths
- Routinely applying moisturizers
- Using oils, such as coconut oil or tea tree oil–the latter especially after shaving
- Using a special shaving gel, cream, or foam
Exfoliating
As was mentioned, we already have a guide to exfoliating here, but there was something important–and especially relevant to smooth thighs–that we left out from that article.
Just to summarize the above article:
- Using mechanical exfoliants like body scrubs can help to clear your skin and make it smoother or softer
- Using a loofah or pouf in the shower can exfoliate your skin before and after hair removal
- Using moisturizing body washes can help to keep your skin hydrated and reduce irritation
- Using a dry brush works exactly like a shaving brush would to provide additional exfoliation to your skin
- Exfoliating regularly will lead to softer hair, reducing the overall likelihood of ingrown hairs, especially in areas with thick, coarse hair
In addition to all of the important aspects of exfoliating we included in that article above, don’t forget about chemical exfoliants too.
Moisturizers with certain acids, such as alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA), glycolic acid, hyaluronic acid, or salicylic acid can all help to noticeably smooth the skin and increase cell turnover rates.
The latter of which will help to fade blemishes, and make your skin look younger, healthier, and more supple.
Picking a Moisturizer
Consistently moisturizing your skin is one of the most important aspects to achieving consistently smooth, healthy skin. So with that said, picking the right one is important.
There’s definitely not a one-size-fits-all for all skin types

Additionally, the needs of the skin on your thighs can be substantially different from the skin on your face.
With that said, try differentiating between normal, oily, and dry skin. Oily skin will consistently shine or feel greasy to the touch, while dry skin may appear rougher or flakier than oily skin. Normal skin should strike a nice balance between these two.
For oily skin, try to opt for a lighter moisturizer, or even a gel moisturizer that won’t clog up your pores any more than the oil already will.
For dry skin, shoot for moisturizers that help the skin maintain it’s protective barrier, such as ceramides. Additionally, moisturize multiple times per day, and look for moisturizers that are fragrance-free, non-comedogenic, and alcohol-free.
Moisturize Right After You Bathe!
The goal here is to try to moisturize your thighs when they are not dripping wet, but not quite dry. Moisturizing when your thighs are damp is going to help your skin to retain some of the natural moisture from bathing.
There are even special moisturizers designed to be used right after you finish up bathing called wet moisturizers. I don’t frequent them, but some people swear by them.
Body Butters
If you can work body butter into your routine, definitely try it out.
Introducing this little cream in the nighttime before bed is a great way to retain moisture, lubricate and nourish the skin, and leave you smelling great.
Many body butters work to complement existing moisturizers, and can extend their effects into noticeably smoother, softer skin.
Using Oils
Depending on your skin type, this may not be a great idea (for instance, if you already have very oily skin), but for those who are able, definitely check out using oils during your skincare routine.
I use a mixture of coconut oil and tea tree oil on the days after I shave, and most of the time at night. This is in addition to moisturizing, and using a body butter or other body lotions.
Tea tree oil specifically can be a great way to prevent ingrown hairs and other blemishes from forming on your skin (which is something we talked a lot about here).
Some people shy away from the benefits of oils and creating custom oil mixtures just because they “don’t want that oily feeling all day!”
The truth is, depending on how you do it, integrating these oil mixtures into your routine will not leave your skin feeling super oily and shiny, and can provide you with benefits that only expensive, highly-specialized moisturizers could.
Taking Baths
Lastly, don’t forget one of the age-old techniques for softening your skin: taking baths.
While this certainly may not be applicable for everyone in this busy world we live in, taking baths even once in a while can do wonders for your skin.
Seeing as though you can expect your thighs and butt to get the most out of this, it’s worth mentioning.
Even more than that, know baths can bring you a lot of personal joy too. Think of it as your own personal spa day. Add in a couple bath bombs (which can contain the same ingredients moisturizers do!) and you’re off to the races.
